Announcement:

The Darien Board of Education on August 26, 2008, appointed Dr. Robert Carlo as Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2009. He will be replacing Warren “Chip” Johnson, who will be retiring next July after 41 years of service to District #61, including the last 15 years as Superintendent.

Dr. Carlo began his educational career as a teacher in District #61 in 1987. He then taught for four years in River Forest before becoming an Assistant Principal in Kirby School District. After two years he became a Principal in Summit Hill School District #161.

In 2001 he returned to Lace School as Principal. For the last two years he has served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. As Superintendent, Bob Carlo will continue his strong interest in Curriculum. Bob will assume the Superintendency after 22 years of experience at all levels in K-8 education. Bob feels that the construction and reorganization in the District has been very positive. He stated:

“Overall, I feel that the changes have been very positive. We have been able to successfully reorganize the district. We will continue to look at the available resources and needs of the district in an effort to align these aspects. We have a very strong administrative team and teaching staff and they continue to work together. Everyone working together has made for a successful transition which will have a positive impact on the students in Darien.”

“I am incorporating the experience I have had last year which has provided me with the opportunity to work within Central Office and develop a working relationship with community, staff across the district, and the Board of Education. I look forward to continuing to be involved with the curriculum and staff development process. Darien is a wonderful place to educate children.”

Bob and his wife, Vicki, have two children, Michael and Mary.

In 1925, the first school built was the old Lace School. By 1944, Lace School had a total enrollment of 12 students, and was granted full recognition for the first time by the Illinois Office of Education. By 1947, the district enrollment had increased to 40 students. Between 1952 and 1973, three elementary schools and one junior high school were constructed in order to accommodate the rapid student growth. In 1977 the district peaked at 2,684 students. Like many other suburban school districts, District #61 began to experience an enrollment decline. Marion Hills School was closed in 1993, and Fairview School in 2007. Today's enrollment is approximately 1700 students. District #61 has developed a reputation for providing excellent educational programs at a very reasonable cost to taxpayers. Not only does the district provide services for the gifted and special needs students, but extra-curricular activities as well. The band and vocal music programs have received national recognition for excellence. The School District received the School Search 2007 Bright Red Apple Award for educational excellence. Only 84 out of 872 school districts were so honored.
